Are shops open on Christmas Day in the UK?

Most UK shops are closed on Christmas Day. Large stores in England and Wales are legally required to close, while smaller shops, petrol stations and some convenience stores may open at limited hours.

The Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004 prohibits any shop in England and Wales with a floor area greater than 280 square metres (roughly 3,000 sq ft) from opening on Christmas Day. This includes almost every supermarket chain, every major department store, and most large high-street retailers.

Smaller shops — corner shops, off-licences, convenience stores, pharmacies — are not covered by the Act and may open.

Scotland

Scotland has its own equivalent: the Christmas Day and New Year’s Day Trading (Scotland) Act 2007. It applies the same 280m² threshold. In practice, almost all major Scottish retail is closed on 25 December.

Northern Ireland

The Shops (Sunday Trading &c.) (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 limits large-shop trading on Christmas Day. The vast majority of Northern Ireland’s retail is closed.

What’s typically open?

  • Petrol stations — many forecourt shops stay open with reduced hours
  • Small convenience stores and corner shops — under the size threshold, can open at discretion
  • Restaurants and pubs — many open for Christmas Day lunch, though most need to be booked weeks in advance
  • Hotels and hotel restaurants — open and busy
  • Cinema and entertainment venues — typically open in the evening with a Boxing Day-style schedule

What’s not?

  • Major supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose)
  • Department stores (John Lewis, M&S, Selfridges)
  • Most high-street retail
  • Banks
  • Post Office branches
  • Royal Mail deliveries

Public transport

Most public transport doesn’t run at all on Christmas Day. TfL underground and London buses do not operate. National Rail runs no scheduled services on Christmas Day. The few options are taxis, ride-share apps and a small number of essential bus services in some cities.
