UK Bank Holidays

Is Easter Sunday a bank holiday in the UK?

No, Easter Sunday is not a bank holiday in the UK. It is a Sunday like any other Sunday — many shops and businesses are closed because of standard Sunday trading laws rather than because of bank holiday legislation.

Which days around Easter are bank holidays?

The two UK bank holidays around Easter are:

  • Good Friday — the Friday before Easter Sunday. A bank holiday across all four UK nations.
  • Easter Monday — the Monday after Easter Sunday. A bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland only. Scotland does not have Easter Monday as an official bank holiday.

Easter Sunday itself sits between these two and has no statutory bank holiday status anywhere in the UK.

Why isn’t Easter Sunday a bank holiday?

The Bank Holidays Act 1871, which created the modern UK system, only formalised days that were not already common days of rest. Sunday was, and is, already a recognised non-working day under custom and (historically) Sunday trading legislation, so it did not need to be separately designated.

Sunday trading rules on Easter Sunday

Large shops in England and Wales (over 280m²) are barred from trading on Easter Sunday under the Sunday Trading Act 1994. This includes most major supermarkets and department stores. Small shops and convenience stores may trade. Garden centres are a frequent exception — many open on Easter Sunday and report it as one of their busiest days of the year.

In Scotland, Sunday trading is unrestricted. In Northern Ireland, larger stores face restrictions similar to England and Wales.

Public transport on Easter Sunday

Most rail and bus services run to a Sunday timetable. Many engineering works are scheduled across the Easter weekend, so check before you travel. London Underground runs a Sunday service.

In summary

If you’re trying to work out a long weekend, Easter Sunday is “free” by default because it’s a Sunday. The bank holiday days that you may not need to book as leave are Good Friday and Easter Monday. Combine them strategically with our Leave Optimiser for the longest possible Easter break.
