What’s a bank holiday?
A bank holiday is a public holiday on which banks (and most large businesses) close. The UK system was formalised by Sir John Lubbock’s Bank Holidays Act 1871 and is now governed by the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971, supplemented by Royal Proclamation for one-off designated holidays (such as for royal events).
